Military Sealift Command Ships
Military Sealift Command ships (MSC) are designed to provide operating services, strategic sealifts for mission support, and ocean transportation. The MSC is also responsible for shipping cargo on commercially operated and chartered ships. Unlike other naval vessels, all MSC Ships are crewed by civilians or Merchant Marines, rather than active duty Naval personnel.
Veterans who served aboard MSC ships may have been exposed to asbestos fibers that were used in the hull or ship parts. Asbestos exposure can lead to a number of deadly diseases, including a deadly form of cancer known as mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, pleural diseases or other health conditions.
Here is a list of some MSC ships which may have been contaminated with asbestos while they were in use by the U.S. Navy:
• USS Denebola AF-56
